Anpanman is based on a Japanese children''s superhero picture book series written by Takashi Yanase. During the Second World War, Takashi Yanase faced starvation countless times, which made him dream about eating anpan, a bean-jam filled pastry. This inspired the creation of Anpanman, who gives parts from his head (anpan) to those in hunger and has no superpowers, thus coined as the world''s weakest hero.
